4K Video and 4K Photo — Capture that moment

That moment you want to remember can occur at any time, and Panasonic’s exclusive 4K photo technology uses 30 frames per second in high resolution 4K Ultra HD Video to extract them as photos. You’ll never miss That moment again.

Note: 4K Photo feature extracts 8-megapixel photo out of a 4K video sequence up to QFHD: 3840 x 2160 pixels, 30 fps, 100Mbit/s.

4K Photo Modes — Free Your Creativity

The 4K Photo function can be used in three different modes, all allowing you to capture that perfect moment at a high burst rate of 30 frames / photos per second:

4K Burst:

4K burst shooting 8-megapixel equivalent images extracted from 4K video as long as the shutter button is pressed.

4K Burst S/S (Start/Stop):

4K burst recording as 4K video then play, pause, and extract any frame / photo as an 8-megapixel equivalent image later.

4K Pre-Burst:

4K pre-burst starts recording one second before and after you press the shutter button. Perfect for unpredictable moments.

4K Video — More Detail Than Full HD

4K video delivers a far more intense viewing experience that is four times larger* than Full HD, resulting in a much higher level of detail.

* Native resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels. When recording videos in 4K, use a card rated as UHS Speed Class 3.

Innovative, Dual-Image Stabilization

The LUMIX GX8 integrates Dual I.S. (Image Stabilizer)* for more effective results. The GX8’s body I.S. works in tandem with the LUMIX lens I.S. for maximum stabilization.

* For photo.

Large OLED LVF

The LUMIX GX8 comes with a high-resolution (2,360k-dot), tiltable OLED Live View Finder which affords high visibility thanks to a 10,000:1 contrast ratio and a high 0.77x magnification (35mm camera equivalent). An optional eyecup (DMW-EC3) made of elastic material enhances comfort.

Panasonic's Depth-From-Defocus (DFD) Auto Focus (AF) technology* instantly calculates the distance between foreground and background and quickly brings the subject into focus with one fast, continuous movement. This new system results in AF speeds up to 0.07 seconds** and a burst shooting speed with Continuous Auto Focus (AFC) of 6 frames per second.

* Contrast AF with DFD technology works only with Panasonic Micro Four Thirds lenses.

Panasonic GX8 - so far so good - updated review
4 Stars
Panasonic GX8 - so far so good - updated review
I am a real fan to the m43 (MFT) camera format, championed by Panasonic and Olympus. I love the fact that the cameras and lenses are smaller and lighter than DSLRs and yet can produce stunningly high quality work that is comparable to that achieved by these these behemoths in most circumstances. The fact that panny have somehow managed to pack 20.3 MP into this sensor size is astounding.Unlike many modern photographers I do not usually jump into a new piece of kit quickly, preferring to make the most of my current kit for as long as I can and concentrating on technique. However, this is a special year for me so I took the opportunity to "move up" from my trusty GX1 to the new GX8, bypassing the GX7 model altogether.Wow, what a difference! The GX8 is quite a hefty body for a m43, at least compared to the GX1, and feels much more solid. The handgrip is larger and more comfortable and the arrangement of buttons and dials although a little bewildering at first, is brilliant in operation. The two rotary dials, around the shutter release and the on/off button, make manual selection of aperture and speed so easy when compared to the old "thumbwheel" of the GX1 (and my trusty LX5). The fact that almost every button can be programmed to the photographer's preference is also a boon.I use the EVF almost exclusively for composing so I am glad to have an integrated tiltable one (I use the LVF1 on my LX5 and the LVF2 on my GX1). The swing out, fully tiltable touchscreen has finally made it to the GX range and is a good feature for protecting the screen when not in use and for using the camera in those situations such as really high (or low) POV shots. So far I have found focus with my existing m43 lenses to be fast (*see update 4 below) and the image quality to be extremely good. There are a host of new features that I would not normally use, but one that stands out is the 4K Photo burst setting where 8MP images are shot at 30fps to allow selection from a fast moving target. This is a new one for me, and I am not sure how this differs from using a normal burst mode (which is able to achieve 40 fps using the electronic shutter a SH speed) but I will experiment.* Update 1 on battery life: I only managed to get 95 shots (shooting RAW+JPEG) on the initial full charge of he DMW-BLC12E 7.2V battery. That was using unpowered lenses and without too much chimping. I am hoping this improves as the battery conditions, but let's see.My spare battery gave me 115 shots (RAW+JPEG) on a shoot with no used of LCD whatsoever, so it's fair to say this camera CHEWS through batteries, unfortunately. I would definitely recommend carrying a couple of spares or more for a day's shooting!* Update 2 on battery life: Today, I managed 230 shots on a fresh battery, including several pano shots so maybe it's something to do with battery conditioning? Go figure! However, I do wonder if it could be a software/firmware issue (see below)* Update 3 on functions: I had a little extra time to play around with some of the functions I wouldn't normally use, namely the scene modes and the panorama mode. The scene modes are great for getting some different black and white compositions, HDR effects, toy effects etc. The great thing for those of us that shoot JPEG and RAW is that even in scene mode a RAW (RW2) file is also saved too, so if you want to change the image in post then you can. Having the instant feedback on the LVF and the ability for a quick JPG is great (Yes, I know this has been available on the previous GX models, but I never used it).The panorama mode is a bit tricky to get used to as you have to practice getting the speed correct. I did this handheld and the camera complained about me panning too slowly, then too fast and finally not panning level enough. In the end though it worked pretty well. You end up with a 8176 x 1920 px (15.7 MP) JPG and no RAW file though, which is a little disappointing. For serious work I shall continue using vertical orientation and stitching but it is a fun thing to have.* Update 4: I have now taken 530 shots and I am not happy with the pinpoint focus, which seems a bit spotty. When used on my 45-200mm lens to get some background defocus the lens is incredibly difficult to focus on the foreground, even when the foreground object is 8-10 feet away. I did not have this issue with this lens on my GX1. I wonder if this is related to the firmware issue (see below, Update 5)* Update 5: IMPORTANT firmware glitch. I have now had two separate occasions when the camera has locked up totally just leaving the EVF functioning (I don't use the LCD for composing). No buttons worked, even the on/off rotary switch. The only thing I could do was to remove the battery. This is extremely disappointing on a $1000+ camera and, despite the fact that I am a panasonic "fanboy," I am going to try to return the camera and get a replacement. Accordingly, I have removed 2 stars form my review, which is a crying shame as otherwise I love the camera!* Update 6: Some 4+ months in I must admit I have forgiven the camera. I didn't end up returning it as I didn't get the "warm and fuzzies" from communicating with the seller. So I persevered. I used only electronic shutter for quite a while, reveling in "stealth mode" this afforded, and didn't have any other problems. Now I am back on the mechanical shutter mode and I haven't had any repeat issues to date. The camera lives in my bag in the trunk and is my "go to" camera with the f/1.7 - 20mm attached. So far so good and I think it has earned one star back from me... :-)Handy References:A couple of resources I have found useful so far are linked below (replace [dot] with a dot, obviously):1. GX8 full user manual - [...]2. Panasonic site for updating lens firmware to see if your lens firmware is OK for IBIS - [...]
