4K Video and 4K Photo — Capture that momentThat moment you want to remember can occur at any time, and Panasonic’s exclusive 4K photo technology uses 30 frames per second in high resolution 4K Ultra HD Video to extract them as photos. You’ll never miss That moment again. Note: 4K Photo feature extracts 8-megapixel photo out of a 4K video sequence up to QFHD: 3840 x 2160 pixels, 30 fps, 100Mbit/s. |
4K Photo Modes — Free Your CreativityThe 4K Photo function can be used in three different modes, all allowing you to capture that perfect moment at a high burst rate of 30 frames / photos per second: 4K Burst: 4K burst shooting 8-megapixel equivalent images extracted from 4K video as long as the shutter button is pressed. 4K Burst S/S (Start/Stop): 4K burst recording as 4K video then play, pause, and extract any frame / photo as an 8-megapixel equivalent image later. 4K Pre-Burst: 4K pre-burst starts recording one second before and after you press the shutter button. Perfect for unpredictable moments. |
4K Video — More Detail Than Full HD4K video delivers a far more intense viewing experience that is four times larger* than Full HD, resulting in a much higher level of detail. * Native resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels. When recording videos in 4K, use a card rated as UHS Speed Class 3. |
Innovative, Dual-Image StabilizationThe LUMIX GX8 integrates Dual I.S. (Image Stabilizer)* for more effective results. The GX8’s body I.S. works in tandem with the LUMIX lens I.S. for maximum stabilization. * For photo. |

With good glass, images are top-notch. Colors, contrast, low noise, high resolution - it's all there. And, if you don't like what you're getting, go into picture styles and adjust to perfection. Yes, I'm a JPEG shooter, but with output this good, RAW manipulation is not needed (IMHO).
Compared to my full frame 6D, the GX8 is easier to use and just encourages creative composition with the tilting viewfinder and swivel screen. The 6D is better in low light, but the GX8 is not unusable (to about 3200ISO). In good light, I can't realistically notice quality differences in image capture other than the obvious DOF differences with wide apertures that is expected with m43 sensor size.
I had a LUMIX GF6, and loved the performance, but hated the shutter 'clacking' and missed a viewfinder so sold it. The GX8 has a better, solid shutter sound that can be completely quiet electronically if needed and the viewfinder is a joy to use. I will also keep my Olympus EP5, but that PEN is twice the weight and not as friendly.
The GX8 is really a computer wrapped around a lens, so imagine the possibilities for customization. This camera does everything I want, and even tells me what I need before I think of it. Yes it is 'bigger', but I still need to curl a pinky under the grip when I'm holding on, so not as big as my whole hand - just big enough to not be too small. Construction is solid while being light, yet you could scratch glass with the milling around the adjustment knobs. Nicely done.
Dual IS/IBIS is neat ( had to update firmware for the Pany 14-42), but I've been taking pics for years without and I'd have the GX8 anyway. It does work as advertised. 4k vids will come later, but enabling the 30fps burst gives you an imaging machine gun.
Read the reviews, rent one for yourself and have a little fun. This one is a bit pricey, but definitely a keeper and I plan to get my money's worth with THREE years warranty.
Who cares if you have extra mega pixles if they produce mush...
I really wanted this to be the solution because on paper it had all my needs meet. Mic input (even though it wasnt standard jack), articulating touch screen, awesome viewfinder. Time to try the more expensive a6500 and hope they fixed the overheating issue.
